CellQuest marks SkyQuest Labs’ foray into the field of Biomedical Research & technology with strategic focus on the Cellular therapies.
SkyQuest Labs intends to set up an exclusive Autologous Adult stem cell transplantation centre. The facility will be meant exclusively for stem cell transplants and will be conducted by experienced and renowned stem cell transplant specialists from around the world.
Service Offerings
i) Autologous Cell Expansion : The current limitation to the potential benefits from Autologous cell transplantation is the limited supply of stem cells available from each collection. There is thus a compelling market need to expand or multiply the available stem cells.
The CellQuest division is seeking to further develop its cell expansion platform in full commercialization via single use kits or license arrangements for:
a) Cell expansion for autologous or allogeneic clinical transplants
b) Bio-manufacturing and biologics development
c) Research & application development for cell therapy and biotechnology companies.
Stem cells today can be used to treat more than 80 diseases, with the potential to treat many more. However, the key limitation in the use of stem cells is their availability. There simply aren't enough stem cells for every need. A cord blood stem cell collection, for example, is typically barely enough for just one treatment.
As a Proactive company, we intend to imperatively focus in the area of ex vivo stem cell expansion. The aim is to increase the number of stem cells outside the body, while maintaining their unique regenerative and differentiation properties. This will enable currently limited stem cell samples to be used in transplants for patients with higher bodyweights, for multiple treatments and for other stem cell therapies.
We have the capability to culture various autologous cells from the same tissue &/or from stem cells derived from Bone Marrow and Peripheral blood, viz. -
Progenitor Cell Culture
Melanocyte Culture
Keratinocyte Culture
Chondrocyte Culture
Osteoblast Culture
Keratocyte Culture
ii) Disease based therapies
SkyQuest Labs intends to set up an exclusive Autologous Adult stem cell transplantation centre. The facility will be meant exclusively for stem cell transplants and will be conducted by experienced and renowned stem cell transplant specialists from around the world. The centre will initially focus on Diabetology and Cardiology related ailments and expand to other areas in future in a phased manner.
Present therapeutic focus category
Cardiology: The branch of medicine dealing with the heart and its diseases. Heart Disease is one of the leading causes of death and long term disability. Based on the available trends, death due to heart diseases would double by the year 2015 and become the single largest contributor to mortality, accounting for almost one-third of all deaths. At present, at least 30 million people are suffering from heart disease in India, which is expected to become 100 million by the year 2010.
In fact, despite successful approaches to prevent or limit cardiovascular disease, the restoration of function to the damaged heart remains a formidable challenge. Recent research has provided us with evidence that adult and embryonic stem cells may be able to replace damaged heart muscle cells and establish new blood vessels to supply them.
Until recently, reperfusion of the ischemic Myocardium was the only intervention available to restore the various cellular functions affected by myocardial ischemia, including preventing cell death by necrosis or apoptosis. Unfortunately, reperfusion may result in extensive myocardial damage, including myocardial stunning, and the functional recovery of the heart may appear only after a period of cardiac contractile dysfunction that may last for several hours or days. It is evident that the limited capacity of regeneration and proliferation of human Cardiomyocytes can prevent neither the scar formation that follows myocardial infarction nor the loss of heart function occurring in patients with cardiomyopathy and heart failure.
Replacement and regeneration of functional cardiac muscle is an important goal that could be achieved either by stimulation of autologous resident cardiomyocytes or by the transplantation of allogenic autologous cells (e.g. embryonic stem cells, bone marrow mesenchymal cells or skeletal myoblast).
